Consumers Energy Provides State Regulators More Time to Approve Sale of 13 Michigan Dams

JACKSON, Mich., Nov. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers Energy today provided state regulators additional time to approve the sale of the company's 13 hydroelectric dams to Confluence Hydro as it continues to work toward an outcome to keep the dams in place.

Consumers Energy is providing the Michigan Public Service Commission more time to allow the Company to continue working with interested parties to achieve a constructive settlement. The extension moves the deadline for the Commission's decision on the sale from Nov. 9 to Dec. 17.

"We understand the desire for communities and our coworkers for an outcome in this case. We are providing for a little more time to reach a constructive agreement that will be a win for our customers, Michigan, and the communities we care about," said Chris Fultz, Consumers Energy's senior vice president of electric supply.

"We continue to work with others to find solutions to ensure these dams will continue to operate safely and responsibly for years to come. We recognize some parties have publicly opposed continuing settlement efforts. Consumers Energy respectfully disagrees and remains committed to working in good faith to achieve a constructive settlement for the benefit of customers, communities and the State of Michigan."

Consumers Energy last year submitted an agreement to sell the dams on five rivers to Confluence Hydro and buy the energy they generate. That provides an incentive to keep all 13 dams in place for at least 30 years and save Consumers Energy customers around $500 million compared to decommissioning the dams.

Consumers Energy is Michigan's largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
